Insulation monitoring in the Formula Student design competition

30. August 2023   |   Read time: approx. 4 minutes

Since its foundation in 1979, Formula Student has developed into one of the most renowned international design competitions for students. The aim of the competition is to provide future engineers with a platform where they can put their theoretical knowledge into practice. Every year, young engineers and motorsport enthusiasts from all over the world meet to present their self-developed formula racing cars and to prove their skills in thrilling races. The design competitions take place in various locations around the world. It's not just about speed, but also about technical innovation, efficiency and teamwork.

The challenges and importance of insulation monitoring

In the very demanding task of developing a formula vehicle, the technical monitoring of the electric racing cars plays a very important role. Electrical systems must not only deliver top performance, but also meet the highest safety standards. This is where insulation monitoring from Bender comes into play. Bender's insulation monitoring devices play a crucial role in ensuring the electrical integrity of the race cars. Insulation monitoring helps to minimise potential damage and safety risks.

The formula racing cars are real high-tech machines that contain a complex mix of electrical, mechanical and software-controlled components. This is where insulation monitoring is crucial, as it ensures the electrical integrity of every part of the race car. Bender's patented 6 mA DC residual current detection detects even the smallest insulation faults that could otherwise lead to electrical short circuits or dangerous voltage surpluses.

Technical acceptance

Before each competition, the vehicle built by the students must be tested before it is taken to the race track.  Vehicles with an electric drive train must partially pass other and supplementary components of the technical inspection. The entirety of the technical acceptance steps for FSE vehicles are:

  • Electrical Scrutineering
  • Tech and Safety
  • Tilt Table
  • Rain Test
  • Brake Test

The inspection of the vehicles of the FSE is preceded by an inspection of the electrical safety. During electrical scrutineering, the electrical safety of the vehicle is checked, i.e. all measures prescribed by the regulations are checked for their functionality. These include insulation monitoring, correct operation of the signal light indicating high voltage system activity (Tractive System Active Light) and the sound indicating the vehicle is ready to drive (Ready To Drive Sound). However, general safety aspects such as mechanically flawlessly laid cables are also checked.

Avoiding damage and increasing safety

The insulation monitoring not only prevents potentially expensive damage to the race cars, but also contributes to the safety of the drivers, engineers and spectators. Electrical faults can lead to dangerous situations, whether during the race or in the pit lane. By detecting and isolating insulation faults in good time, Bender insulation monitoring devices minimise the risk of accidents and failures.

The Formula Student competition as a talent factory

In addition to the technical side, the Formula Student competition is also an important source for identifying and developing future skilled workers. Young engineers who prove themselves in this demanding environment show not only technical skill, but also teamwork, creativity and the ability to work under pressure. Companies like Bender have a great interest in discovering these talented young engineers and integrating them into their teams. The competition thus serves as a talent factory that produces the engineers of tomorrow and at the same time drives the innovative power of the industry.
